About 2D/3D Hybrid Animation

Traditional 2D films use consecutive images or ”frames,” then simulate the motion by each image showing the next gradual progression of steps. Originally, 2D animation was created by hand using cells to generate each “frame.” Movies in 2D used to be extremely labor intensive and once each frame was completed, it became non-reusable. This would not apply if the 2D images are created using computer animation programs. With computer’s, 2D “frames” are usually error free but like the traditional films, they have a generic/flat look and feel, even with the use of a 3D model. A good example of this would be Disney’s “Hercules.”

3D animation is strictly created on a computer in a virtual environment. Models are used in place of cells which allow the creator to manipulate the character like a puppet. With 3D, the characters and scenes usually have much more dimension and are generally more stimulating to the eye than a 2D film. Creating a scene may be time-consuming but it's fairly easy to go back and modify the scene substantially if needed. At the end of the project, if the story isn’t satisfying, it is easier to go back and change it vs., a traditional 2D dimensional film.

“This bold new SFX hero is beyond the realm of 2D/3D.”
